Samsung and UnionPay International Revolutionize Mobile Payments with New Global Partnership

In a major leap forward for mobile payment technology, Samsung Electronics and UnionPay International (UPI) have entered into a groundbreaking collaboration that aims to reshape the way consumers make payments worldwide. This partnership, which combines UPI’s vast global payment network with Samsung’s advanced mobile technology, will offer users more flexibility and convenience by integrating QR Code and Near-Field Communication (NFC) payment solutions into one seamless experience.

The partnership’s launch comes at a time when digital wallets and mobile payment systems are becoming increasingly integral to the global economy, and this collaboration will expand the reach of UnionPay’s mobile payment services across Samsung’s extensive user base.

Bringing Together NFC and QR Code Payments

The collaboration between Samsung and UnionPay International will introduce the “NFRC-QRC-all-in-one” mobile payment solution, which combines both NFC and QR Code payment options into one application. This solution, which is already available in Shanghai, will enable UnionPay cardholders to link their UPI cards to Samsung Wallet, granting them the ability to make secure payments with ease using either NFC or QR Code methods.

The partnership has been initially launched in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) as the first market to offer the service, with Bank of China (BOC) Credit Card International Co., Ltd serving as the first issuing partner for the digital cards. UnionPay and Samsung plan to gradually expand the service to other regions, making it accessible to more consumers worldwide.

Expanding Reach Across Borders

One of the key advantages of this collaboration is the expansion of UnionPay’s payment solutions into new territories. With Samsung’s presence in 62 countries and regions, the partnership promises to significantly increase UnionPay’s reach, both online and offline, among Android users. Currently, UPI’s mobile payment services, including UnionPay QuickPass and UnionPay QR Code payment, are already accepted in more than 100 countries and regions.

Larry Wang, CEO of UnionPay International, described the collaboration as a milestone in the development of a cross-border mobile payment ecosystem. “This collaboration with Samsung Electronics and BOC Credit Card is a pivotal practice of leveraging three parties’ strengths to advance the mobile payment ecosystem,” Wang said. “By integrating UnionPay’s global payment network with Samsung’s terminal ecosystem, we can make cross-border payments more convenient and inclusive.”

Samsung’s Commitment to Enhancing Digital Wallets

Samsung has long been at the forefront of mobile payment technology, and this partnership further solidifies its commitment to providing innovative and secure solutions for users worldwide. Samsung Pay, which has gained popularity for its premium features and advanced biometric security, has consistently ranked as one of the top digital wallets. Through this partnership, Samsung is now positioned to offer an even more comprehensive mobile payment experience for its users.

Woncheol Chai, Executive Vice President and Head of the Digital Wallet Team at Samsung Electronics, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating, “The collaboration between Samsung Wallet and UnionPay International goes beyond a simple technical integration. It marks a significant first step in providing a more convenient and secure mobile payment environment for both companies’ customers.”

Chai went on to explain how the partnership will benefit regions outside of Greater China, highlighting Samsung’s global capabilities and UnionPay’s partnerships with issuers and merchants. He further noted that the addition of QR code payments will enhance the competitiveness of Samsung Wallet, allowing for greater flexibility in mobile payment options.

Bank of China Paves the Way for Digital Card Issuances

Bank of China (BOC) has played a crucial role in the rollout of this innovative mobile payment solution. As the inaugural issuing partner for UnionPay and Samsung’s collaboration, BOC Credit Card International Co., Ltd will allow cardholders to link their UPI cards to Samsung Wallet, enabling them to make payments conveniently using the new integrated platform.

Stephen Chan, Deputy Chief Executive of Bank of China (Hong Kong), expressed excitement over the partnership and its potential to transform the mobile payment experience in Hong Kong and beyond. “We are delighted that BOC Credit Card has become the first institution in Hong Kong to support the payment service launched by UPI and Samsung Electronics,” Chan said. “This service not only offers a convenient payment experience to customers in Hong Kong but also spearheads the global rollout of Samsung Wallet, marking a key step forward in innovative mobile payments.”

Strengthening the Global Mobile Payment Landscape

The partnership between Samsung and UnionPay International is poised to transform the landscape of mobile payments worldwide. By combining Samsung’s terminal ecosystem with UnionPay’s vast global network, the collaboration offers a seamless payment experience that is both secure and efficient. As more regions begin to implement the solution, consumers will have access to a broader range of payment options, all from within one trusted digital wallet.

The integration of QR Code payments with NFC technology is a game-changer in the mobile payments industry, and this partnership is expected to lead the way for further advancements in the field. Whether it’s for everyday purchases, international transactions, or even cross-border payments, this new collaboration will make it easier than ever for consumers to make secure and seamless transactions using their smartphones.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Mobile Payments

As the world increasingly shifts toward digital solutions, the demand for integrated and convenient payment options continues to rise. Samsung and UnionPay’s collaboration is a major step toward addressing this demand and ensuring that mobile payments remain a reliable and accessible service for users across the globe. With plans for expansion into more countries, this partnership is set to shape the future of mobile payments and redefine how we think about financial transactions in the digital age.

As the service gains traction, it’s clear that the partnership between Samsung and UnionPay International is not just about advancing mobile payment technology; it’s about creating a more connected and inclusive global payment ecosystem.
